Some of my favorite sessions unfold in a family's own backyard, where the light and the space belong entirely to them.
Dili and I met at a moms' night out: drinks, followed by a drag show. Coffee at Pistachio Cafe with just us two came next, then a playdate at the park where our boys played together beautifully. Brunch followed, and we stayed talking for hours.
By the time this session came around, it felt less like a shoot and more like an afternoon with a close friend, because that is exactly what it was.
We photographed Dili, her husband Elliot, and their son Johan outside their home, on their own property, and in their own light. We started around six, right as the late afternoon sun began to soften, and worked through a mix of posed moments and the ones that happened on their own. Johan being his adorable self carried just as much weight as anything we planned.
At one point, Elliot picked a small bouquet of wildflowers from the yard and handed them to Johan, who paused for a few photos with them before running the bouquet over to my assistant Bella and handing it off with the biggest smile. Small, unplanned, and the kind of moment you can't direct.
