My parents came to this country from Honduras with very little, and they built something extraordinary from it. They bought a home. They raised three kids who went on to graduate from good colleges. They did it through years of quiet, steady sacrifice, the kind that rarely gets photographed or celebrated, but that shapes everything that comes after it.
When I became a mother myself, I understood my parents in a completely new way. The patience they had, the guidance they gave, the way they showed up for every version of me, it all became invaluable in a way I could not have appreciated before I had my own children. Now, when I am figuring out how to raise my sons, I find myself reaching back for the things they taught me without even realizing I was learning them at the time.
My parents visit us in Woodbridge once or twice a month, and every single time, my husband and I try to convince them to move in with us. We mean it every time. Their visits are never long enough, and the house feels different, fuller and calmer at once, whenever they are here.
They have that effect on everyone, not just us. Every friend of mine who has met my parents falls in love with them almost instantly. There is something about the way they carry themselves, generous, warm, endlessly kind, that people notice right away. They are, in every sense of the word, exemplary human beings.
Photographing them was a gift I did not take lightly. I wanted the images to hold what I feel every time I look at them: gratitude, admiration, and the kind of love that only comes from watching two people build a life from nothing and hand it to their children as a foundation.
This is the kind of session that reminds me why I do this work. Not every photograph is about documenting a moment. Some are about honoring a legacy.
