I have known Christina since I was five years old and she was three. She is one of those people who has simply always been there, woven into the fabric of my life so completely that I sometimes forget to really look at her.
Then I put her in front of my camera.
We shot on her property in Woodbridge on a golden evening in late spring. She wore a white eyelet dress and sat in the grass and the light fell on her the way light falls on people who belong exactly where they are. Something shifted. I have always known Christina is beautiful. Through the lens, it hit differently.
The moment that stays with me is showing her the back of the camera between setups and watching her face light up. She was seeing herself the way I was seeing her, and that excitement was contagious. We fed off each other the whole evening.
I think that is what portrait photography does at its best. It gives you permission to really look at someone you love, and then hand them that vision of themselves. Christina did not need me to make her beautiful. She just needed someone to pay attention.
