Sea Bluff Beach in West Haven, CT is one of my favorite portrait locations in all of New Haven County. It is not a famous beach. You will not find it on a tourist list. It is a local beach, the kind where the same families show up every summer and the regulars know each other by name. Which is exactly what makes it so good for portraits.
I shot there on a March morning with two little boys in cream sweaters. Midday light, which is not usually my preference. And the place still gave me everything I needed.
What makes it work photographically
Sea Bluff Beach faces south along the Long Island Sound, which means you get workable light across a long stretch of the day. The sand is pale and fine, bright without being blinding. And then there are the rocks. Along the edges of the beach, dark rocky outcroppings break up what could otherwise be a very flat scene. They give children somewhere to climb and perch and just be themselves, which tends to produce better photographs than standing and posing ever will.
The openness is both the gift and the challenge. On a clear midday in summer, the light comes in hard and flat. I prefer to shoot here in the shoulder seasons, when the sun sits lower and softer, or early in the morning before it climbs. Overcast days are genuinely beautiful at this location. Diffused light over all that pale sand and open water is something special.
Who it is perfect for
Families, children, couples, and dogs. All of them. If you have a dog who loses his mind on a beach, this is your session location. If you have small children who need to run and move and not be corralled into a spot, same answer. The space gives everyone room to breathe, and that almost always shows up in the photographs.
When to go
The shoulder seasons are ideal. Late September through November gives you lower light, fewer people, and that particular quality of autumn air that photographs beautifully. Early spring works too, as long as you layer up. If you want a summer session here, go early morning before the beach fills and the light gets harsh.
Parking and access
Sea Bluff Beach is located on Ocean Avenue in West Haven, Connecticut, a short drive from New Haven. Parking is free before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. During summer season a fee applies, around $20, and the lot is not large because this is a local beach. Go early or go late and you will have a much easier time of it. No permit is required for portrait sessions.
What to wear
The palette here practically suggests itself. Cream, white, soft denim, warm neutrals. Anything that lets the landscape breathe around your family rather than competing with it. Avoid busy patterns or anything too bright unless you want the eye to go there first. Layers are smart in the shoulder seasons because the wind off the Sound can surprise you.
